Young Somerset (YS), formerly Somerset Rural Youth Project, is a vibrant, innovative and well-respected charity and voluntary youth work organisation delivering services and activities for young people and communities.


Our vision is of a Somerset where young people feel a sense of belonging, a willingness to contribute and a future that is not limited by access to opportunities and services.


YS engages and supports young people in a range of social, economic, educational and recreational opportunities designed to encourage social inclusion and life-long learning by:

  • addressing issues of exclusion, isolation and disadvantage
  • increasing the take up of education, training, employment and enterprise opportunities
  • encouraging community regeneration through good citizenship and participation
  • providing access to information, advice and guidance on issues relevant to young people’s lives and aspirations
  • generating and participating in partnerships involving young people and key local stakeholders
  • involving young people in the organisation’s development and delivery

We work with around 2,500 young people annually on a range of projects including the National Citizen Service, Open Access youth provision, the Rural Music Network, Skills Development, Mental Health provision and more.

Young Somerset is looking to recruit four new Trustees to support its Board in strong governance and strategic vision for the organisation. We are seeking volunteers who are  passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people in Somerset and with a particular expertise in the following areas: Youth Work, Business Development, Learning & Development (training), and Fundraising/Marketing.


A full induction is offered and Trustees are expected to attend 7-8 meetings per year (4 full Board meetings, plus sub-groups as applicable) along with a half-day strategic planning session.
